Villa in Tuscany

Tuscany is famed for its villas surrounded by beautiful artistic gardens culminating from the Rennaissance period.  Most of these villas were built or purchased by members of such famous families as the Medici, Ricasoli, Chigli and Rospigliosi. They were ideal retreats and resting places for the nobility to get away from the cities during the long hot days of summer. Many of the Tuscan villas were simply furnished but others were laden with antiques and works of art. Mostly they had large gardens laid out with a flair that is synonymous with Italy.

Some of the plainest villas are found around Florence where some still have the structure of their mediaeval past. In comparison, around Lucca in the 17th century, many facades were embellished with loggias and wide bays, sculptures and balustrades. In the area round Siena there are mediaeval castles in the same proximity as simple villas using natural materials which blend into the Tuscany countryside.
