Spas

natural spa

Tuscany is the famous region of Italy for Spas and indeed the location of most of the spa towns. These warn water springs have attracted visitors, whether for health or relaxation, since time can remember.

Some of the spas have been made into elegant buildings where medical therapy can be obtained, whilst others are natural like the hot waterfall outside Terme di Saturnia. Perhaps the most famous due to their charm and elegance are Montecatini, Chianciano and Saturnia (east of Grosseto).

Most of the spas reached the peak of their fame in the 19th and early 20th centuries at a time when people took elegant holidays in fine surroundings of wonderful architecture and beautifully landscaped gardens.

A visit to the thermal falls at Saturnia is recommended since this is a natural wonder of Tuscany. The mediaeval village of Saturnia nestles in the rolling hills of southern Tuscany and used to be a Roman colony. Later in the 1800’s a thermal establishment was made and still attracts tourists today. At the foot of the hill hot water reaching 37 degrees centigrade gushes out and spills into natural pools formed in the rock.

The spa is most famous for its therapeutical qualities and apparent ability to cure certain illnesses. Here you have to accept the sulphurous smell in order to immerse yourself in the wonderful beauty of the setting.
